Manual therapy: 

In its most basic form, this simply means treatment by the therapist using his/her hands to diagnose and treat ligament, tendon, joint, and muscle issues. Forms of manual therapy may include joint mobilization,

massage, neuromuscular therapy, and facilitated stretching. Manual therapy can be extremely effective in helping to decrease muscle spasm, increase flexibility, improve joint mobility, decrease inflammation, increase blood flow, and improve function, thereby helping to reduce pain.

Therapeutic ultrasound:

A therapeutic ultrasound machine delivers sound waves to the tissues. A gel will be applied to your pet's fur so that the sound waves can reach the tissues. Some patients need to be shaved for the sound waves to reach affected tissues. Ultrasound has both thermal (warming) and non-thermal effects. Ultrasound helps to increase blood flow to the treated area, and can also help to decrease swelling and edema. These effects can help provide pain relief. It can also be used to help with remodeling of scar tissue. Not to be confused with the diagnostic ultrasound used to visualize internal organs (or a growing fetus), therapeutic ultrasound can be used to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis and muscle strains.

Therapeutic exercises:

Specifically designed for your pet, therapeutic exercises may be prescribed to help improve strength, flexibility, range of motion, proprioception and balance. We will work as a team to make sure you are comfortable performing these exercises at home. Rehabilitation therapy is a partnership between pet owner/guardian, therapist, and pet and therapeutic exercises are a key part to this partnership.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation:

Also called NMES, this small machine can be used to modulate nerve impulses to the muscles. Depending on the settings used, it can be used to cause muscle contraction or to treat mild to moderate pain. This is mostly used for pets that are not able to stand on their own such as patients that are paralyzed or recovering from surgery.

Targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy:

Also referred to as tPEMF, targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can be delivered in various forms. An assissi loop is most commonly used. The goals of this therapy are to reduce pain and inflammation. More information can be found here. tPEMF is also available in the form of a dog or cat bed. There are various other types of devices that also deliver PEMF.

Dry needling:

Dry needling is used primarily in treating trigger points. A myofacial trigger point is more commonly referred to as a “knot” because it tends to be firm when touched. If you are running your hand al

ong a muscle and feel a focal area of tightness that is also sore or tender, this is most likely a trigger point. The therapist will insert a small needle into this area. Oftentimes, you will see the muscle twitch when the needle is inserted. Dogs and cats tend to tolerate this treatment very well. Most don't even seem to notice the needles. The goals of dry needling are to increase blood flow to the area, relax the muscle, and provide pain relief.

Hydrotherapy including underwater treadmill:

Hydrotherapy is a great way to help improve strength and mobility while decreasing stress on the joints.  Depending on the height of the water, having a patient walk in the underwater treadmill can help improve range of motion and strength while decreasing weight bearing forces on the joints.  We have partnered with a number of rehabilitation facilities that offer underwater treadmill and other forms of hydrotherapy such as swimming.  We can continue to perform the majority of your pets rehabilitation therapy at your regular veterinarian while incorporating some hydrotherapy off site at one of our partnering facilities.

Low level laser therapy AKA cold laser therapy:

Depending on location, we may use a class IIIb or class IV laser to treat your pet.  Similar to therapeutic ultrasound, you can not "feel" the laser, so there should be no pain associated with its application.  The LLLT can enhance leukocyte infiltration, increase macrophage activity, promote neovascularization, increase proliferation of fibroblast and keratinocytes, promote early epithelialization, increase the concentration of growth factors, and increase the tensile strength of scar tissue.  Laser therapy is contraindicated over cancerous tissues.

Laser therapy can be used to:
    - Reduce pain 
    - manage inflammation 
    - enhance wound healing and nerve regeneration
ex: arthritis, wounds and inflamed tissue including superficial hot spots, otitis externa, lick granulomas, as well as deeper and more aggressive degloving and laceration wounds, postinvasive trauma and surgical procedures as well, fractures .
